Chelsea have already swooped in on Brighton’s manager once before with Graham Potter, but he only lasted a few months up until April 2023.

Bruno Saltor stepped in briefly before allowing Frank Lampard a big return to the club, but similarly, he only lasted a short while, 85 days.

Pochettino seemed to have the backing and the plans to re-establish Chelsea as a top four team with an influx of players in the summer, but they ended up sixth overall this year.

Now, it seems the Blues are aiming higher and want a manager with a particular focus on defence and possession football.

De Zerbi does have that potential and at least has solid Premier League experience with Brighton, where he managed a 42% win-rate.

Including guiding them to a top six finish in the 2022/23 season when Chelsea were down in 12th.

McKenna on the other hand, is a bit of a risk and would need a lot of convincing to depart Ipswich after taking them on two successive promotions from League One to the Championship, to the top-flight.

He’s managed Ipswich since 2021 in December and has seen them win 75 times and only lost 20, which certainly fits the Blues’ defensive ethos.

A return for Mourinho would be rather fitting too, he knows the Premier League well, and of course led Chelsea through one of their most successful eras.

Kompany could be back down in the Championship next season with Burnley, but an offer from Chelsea could sway him and he did have a tough time in the league, but surely has more to offer with a squad who finished top six.
