Man United don’t need Di Maria! Former star says £60m should have gone on Hummels and Khedira

Ray Wilkins claims Manchester United should have spent £60million on Mats Hummels and Sami Khedira, not Angel Di Maria

Ray Wilkins has questioned Manchester United's decision to spend £60million on Angel di Maria.

United smashed the British transfer record to land the Argentine winger from Real Madrid and his arrival has given supporters and the club a welcome lift.

But Wilkins does not share the excitement around the 26-year-old's arrival at Old Trafford.

According to the former United star, the money used on Di Maria would have been better spent on a top-class defender and defensive midfielder, with Mats Hummels and Sami Khedira the players he believes the club should have targeted.

"They are putting the roof on before the foundations of the house," said Wilkins, co-host on Friday's Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

";I think they spent the £60million unwisely on Di Maria.

"Why don’t they go and pay £35million for Hummels first? We know Dortmund, as good a side as they are, are a selling club. Take him out of Dortmund and put him in alongside Phil Jones.

"Then go and get Khedira for £25million. There's your £60million and you already look more solid."
