Liverpool star’s performance branded ‘average’ by national team manager ahead of Euro 2024

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was labelled ‘average’ by Hungary head coach Marco Rossi after their defeat to the Republic of Ireland.
The Magyars lost their 14-match unbeaten record after slipping to 2-1 defeat in their Euro 2024 warm-up clash in Dublin on Tuesday.
Hungary will face Scotland at this summer’s tournament and in preparation for the clash, Rossi requested the tune-up match with Ireland due to their similarities with Steve Clarke’s side.
But he was left bemused after Hungary lost their unbeaten record on the eve of the Euros, thanks to Troy Parrott’s last-gasp winner.
Rossi was less than impressed by the performance of captain Szoboszlai on the night and didn’t hold back when describing the Anfield star’s display.
"Szoboszlai had an average night, but that's football,” Rossi told . “Sometimes it goes better, sometimes less. Roland Sallai had a better day than him, but basically, there was no problem with the team's attitude.
“We should never have lost and we wouldn't even have been satisfied with a draw. Ireland had two chances and took them both. They were nothing special although I must congratulate them.
“We didn't do what we had to do, for the future we must learn from our mistakes. When you are in the 91st minute, you cannot concede a goal like that. If it's not possible to win then you take a draw but we were on the backfoot and conceded.”
He continued: “I am not happy with the result, despite the fact that we were coming off 14 matches without a defeat. But we are not Germany or England, we are in a process and we are on the right track.”
Szoboszlai is expected to play a key role for Hungary at Euro 2024 in a group that also contains Germany and Switzerland.
The 23-year-old missed out on the tournament three years ago due to injury and will be hoping to make a big impression this time round.
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig last summer and immediately impressed in the Reds’ new-look midfield.
But he was unable to reach the heights of his early-season form in the second half of the campaign, with his last Premier League goal coming against Chelsea in late January.
