The offer for Gareth Bale to come out of retirement and sign for Wrexham is ‘still on the table’, co-owner Rob McElhenney has told talkSPORT.

The American even admitted the golf-loving Welsh football hero can get on the course as much as he wants, as long as he plays for the newly-promoted League One side.

McElhenney, who owns Wrexham alongside fellow actor Ryan Reynolds, first made the ambitious play to get Bale to the Racecourse Ground last year following the club’s long-awaited promotion from the National League.

Having signed former Premier League and England goalkeeper Ben Foster, the Hollywood duo plotted an even bigger coup by bringing one of Wales’ most famous sons back home.

Unfortunately for McElhenney, Bale turned him down, but it appears the Wrexham chief is not giving up easily.

“Gareth Bale is still technically available,” he told talkSPORT live from the MLB London Series, where he was watching his beloved Phillies play the New York Mets.

“I made the plea last year and I’m just going to tell Gareth that the offer’s still on the table.

“We’ll let you off for golf, whenever you need to get off. As long as you come to training once or twice a week we can figure out how to get you ten minutes on the pitch.

“And the golf courses - Wales is amongst the most beautiful countries in the world!”

Bale has been retired for two years, having hung up his boots shortly after the 2022 World Cup.

That was Wales’ first World Cup appearance in 64 years, with the winger keen to end his career on a high, and as his country’s all-time top goalscorer with 41 goals.

And it appears the five-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid is quite enjoying the retired life, meaning McElhenney may have to raise his game to really tempt the Welsh wizard to lace up his boots again.

Asked about the Wrexham links last year, Bale said: “No I don't think so. I think I was looking more for a free round of golf off Rob!

"I'm sure we'll have a chat and a joke but I'm quite happy where I am.

"I'm spending a lot of time with my kids, my wife, time that I've lost so much over the years being committed to football. I'm just enjoying family life and playing some golf."

Keep trying, Rob!
