England 1-1 Denmark LIVE REACTION: Three Lions held to draw by Danes and miss out on chance to secure top spot in Group C after two games

England were unable to book their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Thursday after being held to a 1-1 draw by Denmark.

The Three Lions took the lead early on through Harry Kane’s sweeping finish, however, they failed to build on that goal.

And the Danes equalised thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Morten Hjulmand, with that effort boosting their confidence.

Gareth Southgate’s side then came under a lot of pressure until half time but they made it with the scores level.

In the second half, Phil Foden hit the post as England looked for a winner that never came and they were forced to settle for a point.

Their fate remains up in the air now, with a positive result needed in their final game against Slovenia to secure a place in the knockout stages.

You can recap the action in our live blog below...

  • England 1-1 Denmark - REACTION

Right, that's it from us tonight after a disappointing performance from England in Euro 2024.

They are still top of the group, but both displays in this tournament have been poor and devoid of ideas.

Gareth Southgate has been honest about that, now he needs to fix it.

We hope you enjoyed the coverage, and we'll see you all again soon.

In the meantime, head over to our main blog for coverage of Spain versus Italy.

  • Danish fans think England were decent

We might believe that England were poor, but that isn't the view of many Danish fans.

talkSPORT's Sean O'Brien spoke to many after the game and didn't think the Three Lions were that bad.

One said: “The takeaway from this game isn't that England were bad or Southgate's starting 11 was s***. It was 100% Denmark's fault that the England team played so s***.

“And the Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand showed that he's supposed to be the Danish coach. And to be honest, 1-1 doesn't feel as exciting as it should. We should have won this game. But we can make our own luck and own destiny in the last game.

“I think when you look back on the game, 1-1, England-Denmark. People will say that England had a bad game. People will say that England didn't play up to their best. People will say that England should have won this game. But no, this is a credit to Denmark. Denmark played England off the park. No doubt about that."

  • Phillips' absence

Interesting comments from Gareth Southgate when asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold's midfield role.

The England manager believes his side are missing Kalvin Phillips.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "He [Trent] has had some moments where he's delivered what we thought he would.

"We know it's an experiment. We know we don't have a natural replacement for Kalvin Philips.

"We're trying different things and at the moment we're not flowing as we'd like."

  • Southgate's thoughts

England manager Gareth Southgate has been speaking to the BBC about the 1-1 draw with Denmark.

He said: "The performance was clearly not what we would have hoped.

"We aren't using the ball well enough, and if you do that, you are going to suffer, so there is another level that we've got to find."

When asked if he was telling the team to drop deeper, he said: "No.

"We are playing teams that are quite fluid, and it's difficult to get pressure on them, but we have to do that better than we have done these two matches.

"That's part of the problem, but also keeping the ball is part of the problem."

  • Eriksen proud of Denmark

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen was pleased with his country's performance against England.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "We are disappointed not to get the win, but for us, it was a better game.

"England didn't surprise us, but we hurt them with the chances we had, and we should have won.

"I don't think England dropped deeper, I thought the game was even."

  • No minutes for Palmer or Gordon

Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon managed 65 goal contributions between them in 96 appearances last season.

Palmer was Chelsea's best player by miles and ensured the club finished sixth, while Gordon was sublime for Newcastle and was one of the best left wingers in the country.

Yet, they've both not played a single minute of football so far.

It seems strange players in such good form are being totally ignored.

Of course, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze also had great seasons, but it might be time to try something new.

  • Kane reacts

England captain Harry Kane has been speaking to the BBC about the Three Lions' 1-1 draw with Denmark.

He said: "I think we said before the tournament there's no easy games and I think that's showing.

"We've got levels we can reach and we can be better both with and without the ball. I think the sign of a good team is when you're not playing at your best and still find a way to get results like we have in the last two games.

"We're top of the group. We know we can improve. I know there will probably loads of noise and a bit of disappointment back home but we experienced this in the last Euros as well when we drew to Scotland.

"Step by step, we'll get there."

  • O'Hara and Cundy slam England

We've already seen Jamie O'Hara's England tweet, but he let rip on the talkSPORT YouTube stream, along with Jason Cundy.

O'Hara said: "We look like Scotland right now. What am I watching? We look like Scotland. Mate, we are awful.

"This has been an absolutely diabolical England performance. Only one player deserves to be in an England shirt today is Marc Guehi.

"Awful performance. Awful performance from England, terrible. We don't deserve to win. I can't believe how bad of an England performance this has been. This has been coming, though."

Meanwhile, Cundy added: "I think this is probably the worst performance under Southgate in a tournament.

"We are stinking Frankfurt out, we are stinking Germany out."

  • England 1-1 Denmark - REACTION

    • England have won just two of their last eight competitive meetings with Denmark (D4 L2), having won each of their first four such games against them.
    • There have been 13 goals scored from outside the box at EURO 2024, already more than there were in the entire group stages of the previous tournament at EURO 2020 (12).
    • Harry Kane’s opener was his fifth goal at the UEFA European Championship, becoming the first England player and eighth player overall to score 5+ goals at both the men’s FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.
    • Denmark’s leveller was England’s eighth goal conceded from outside the box at the UEFA European Championship. No side has conceded more on record in the history of the competition (since 1980, Portugal also 8).
  • Game to forget

Given Jude Bellingham was so good against Serbia, it was a surprise to see just how poor he was tonight.

The game seemed to pass the Real Madrid man by, while the England midfield couldn't get the ball to him in dangerous positions.

He was a bit of a passenger, although, he wasn't the only one.

  • Walker reflects

England right-back Kyle Walker spoke to the BBC in the immediate aftermath of England's poor 1-1 draw with Denmark.

He said: "We're top of the group, so let's try and take the positives.

"We've not lost. We conceded a great strike from outside the box.

"They had the upper hand in certain parts of the game, so we had to start thinking 'what if?'

"The manager has expressed that he wants us to play attacking football, but in tournament football, you have to adapt."

  • O'Hara fuming

Well, it's safe to say that Jamie O'Hara didn't enjoy that England performance.

He was watching the match with Jason Cundy on the talkSPORT watchalong and has tweeted.

  • England still in control of the group

If we are to take any positives from that, it's that England are top of the group with one game to go.

But if they do lose to Slovenia and Denmark beat Serbia, they would finish third.

  • England 1-1 Denmark - FULL TIME

There goes the whistle and England have scraped a point off Denmark.

The Three Lions opened the scoring and started well, but as soon as Harry Kane scored, the team's mindset changed, and the Danes came back and equalised through Morten Hjulmand's wonder strike.

From that point, Denmark were the better team and created plenty of chances.

Jordan Pickford was the much busier goalkeeper, and England will have to be better.

Stay with us for all the reaction.

  • England 1-1 Denmark

90+' - Three minutes of added time indicated.

    Stuart Pearce is furious.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "We’ve got absolutely no idea what we’re trying to achieve. Have I got my head in my hands? You’re damn right. Wowee."

  • England 1-1 Denmark

    88' - Jordan Pickford takes a free-kick short.

Kyle Walker collects and smashes a long, hopeful and useless ball into the box that bounces behind for a goal kick.

  • England 1-1 Denmark

84' - England lose the ball again out on the right.

    It comes for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

He beats Conor Gallagher and curls a shot towards goal that flashes just past the post.

This is nervy stuff for the Three Lions now.

Stuart Pearce thinks England just want the game to end now.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: Pearce: "This final whistle can't come quick enough for England."

  • England 1-1 Denmark

83' - Marc Guehi is caught on the ball by Alexander Bah.

The right-back charges into the box and whips in a low cross, but the Crystal Palace centre-back gets back and makes a crucial intervention to redeem himself.

  • England 1-1 Denmark

81' - Morten Hjulmand and Christian Eriksen are taken off for Christian Norgaard and Andreas Skov Olsen.

  • England 1-1 Denmark

80' - Into the last ten minutes here.

Jarrod Bowen picks up a pass from Jude Bellingham and looks to slip Ollie Watkins in on goal.

It's a decent idea, but it's cut out.

  • Time running out

  • England 1-1 Denmark

78' - The Three Lions look totally out of ideas.

Eberechi Eze tries to bring some life into England with a threaded ball down the left, which Ollie Watkins gamely goes after.

He can't quite keep in play, but at least he's making runs.

  • England 1-1 Denmark

    75' - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fancies a dig from range.

He takes aim and fires a relatively weak effort straight at Jordan Pickford, who makes a comfortable stop.
