Manchester United will head into the new season in optimistic mood after a solid transfer window, having put in a good shift against four-time defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend before losing on penalties.

Erik ten Hag's side suffered a highly disappointing league campaign last time out, finishing seventh after a third place finish the previous season, though the campaign was saved slightly by an impressive FA Cup final win over Manchester City on their final outing.

The Cup win secured Europa League football for the club this season, in which the 20 time champions of England will be hoping to be challenging for the Champions League once again, as well as silverware from cup competitions.

United lost three of their five pre-season friendlies over the summer, which included trips to Norway, Scotland and the United States, recording wins over Rangers and Real Betis but falling to defeats against Rosenborg, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Visiting the Theatre of Dreams in Friday's Premier League opener will be a Fulham side who finished 13th in the table last time around but have had to deal with the loss of their star player, defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha, who has joined Bayern Munich this summer.

Centre back duo Tosin Adarabioyo and Tim Ream have also gone through the exit door at Craven Cottage this summer, as has Willian, leaving manager Marco Silva with a bit of rebuilding to do through the early stages of the new campaign.

Emile Smith-Rowe has signed from Arsenal in what is seen as an exciting purchase for the west London club, who enjoyed a mostly successful pre-season, winning four of their five friendlies, including wins over Benfica and Hoffenheim, losing out only to Sevilla.

The last time the two sides met saw Fulham record their first win over United in 18 meetings between the two sides dating back to 2009, secured by Alex Iwobi's 97th minute winner for the Cottagers at Old Trafford in February early this year.
