It’s been a funny few days for Santiago Vergini.

The Sunderland defender, on loan from Estudiantes, was rubbing shoulders with Argentina’s elite last week as he earned his first international call-up since 2012 but now he finds himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons.

In the Black Cats’ horrific 8-0 defeat at Southampton, the versatile 26-year-old attempted to deal with Morgan Schneiderlin’s pass but instead of clearing his lines, Vergini fluffed them, sending a curling volley beyond Vito Mannone, who was helpless.

And fans took to Twitter to mock the Sunderland in their droves…
