Julian Nagelsmann is open to taking the Manchester United job, talkSPORT understands.

But should the Red Devils want to bring him to Old Trafford, they may have to rely on a unique clause in former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull contract.

Erik ten Hag was sacked by Man United on Monday after winning just one of his final eight games, with the final straw seemingly being the 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday.

Former Red Devils star Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in interim charge until a replacement is found, and his first test will be Leicester City in the Carabao Cup round of 16.

Germany manager Nagelsmann has been consistently linked with the Manchester club over the years, particularly since INEOS’s arrival due to their data-driven approachs.

But ironically, Man United may have to rely on their old Liverpool foe Klopp to land the former Bayern Munich boss.

Discussing who could replace Ten Hag on White and Jordan, the ex-Crystal Palace chairman said: “You mentioned Nagelsmann and there’s an interesting thought process through this.

“There is an exclusion in Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull contract [for the Germany job].

“You look at Nagelsmann to Man United and Klopp to Germany.”

Klopp ended his time at Liverpool at the end of last season, citing running out of energy after nine years and not wanting to do the job on ‘three wheels’.

In July, the German confirmed he was ‘done’ as a coach. He then joined Red Bull, who own a network of clubs across the globe, as Head of Global Soccer.

However, reports earlier this month suggested Klopp's contract with Red Bull includes a clause which would allow him to leave if the German national team were to come calling.

However, his long term friend Wojtek Czyz said Klopp didn’t have his eye on the Germany job at the time of his Red Bull appointment.

The Paralympic champion, who met Klopp before the latter headed to Liverpool, told : “I can tell you one thing from this, what I think about Jurgen.

“Jurgen is not thinking now about the German national team. Jurgen will be 100 per cent committed to be successful in this role he took on now.”

Simon Jordan is not shocked that Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag

He added: “In the future, you know, so many things can happen, and everything will be done and will be right at the right time. And so now there is no discussion about any future thoughts about the German national team.”

talkSPORT understands Man United are willing to entertain paying compensation to get who they want.

But should Nagelsmann want to leave Germany for Manchester, he and United may be need to hope Klopp is keen to take his current role.

37-year-old Nagelsmann led Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2022. He took the Germany job in September 2023 and in April extended his Germany contract to 2026 for the upcoming World Cup.

He led the Germans to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on home soil, losing 2-1 in extra time to eventual champions, Spain.
