Manchester United replay will set Cambridge up for many years, says chief executive

Cambridge United chief executive Jez George has revealed their FA Cup replay with Manchester United has the potential to leave a huge legacy at the Abbey Stadium

Cambridge United chief executive Jez George has revealed their FA Cup replay with Manchester United has the potential to leave a huge legacy at the Abbey Stadium.

The Yellows put on a brilliant display against their Premier League opponents to claim a 0-0 draw and force the fourth round clash to a second match, which will now be held at Old Trafford.

It is a clash which is reported to be worth a reported £1.6million to Cambridge, and George told the Weekend Sports Breakfast the affects could help the club build a bright future.

He said: “It’s apt timing because we’re trying to redevelop the stadium and we need some help from the council for a development on the edge of the city, for a training complex and houses, which will pay for everything.

“Hopefully everybody will see how important football is to a city like Cambridge.

“Financially we’ve really turned the cub around a little bit in the last few years. The chairmen and the directors really helped the club financially when we were outside the Football League. We had a business plan this year that we would break even and what this does is secure the future of the football club.

“If you can invest this money wisely we can really set the club up for many years and that’s the legacy you want from a tie like this.”
