Crystal Palace sign former Newcastle striker Ameobi on free transfer

Shola Ameobi has signed for Crystal Palace on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The former Newcastle striker joined Turkish side Gaziantep last summer, but left in December and is someone Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew knows well from his time in the North-East.

Ameobi has been at Palace's training ground this week hoping to work his way back into a Premier League club and the Eagles have beaten QPR and West Brom to the Nigerian's signature.

Pardew said: "He'll bring a wealth of experience, along with Glenn Murray, to give to our young strikers.

"He's played at the top level all of his life, and his experience will be important in the final run in.

"I'm pleased to have him here, not only as player but also as a person. He is a good character to have in the squad."
