Newcastle United poised to sign former Liverpool and Sunderland defender Javier Manquillo

Newcastle are on the verge of completing a deal for former Liverpool and Sunderland defender Javier Manquillo, according to reports in Spain.

The 23-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at Atletico Madrid and is not thought to be part of coach Diego Simeone's plans going forward.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, Manquillo, who made ten appearances during a loan spell at Liverpool during the 2014/15 season, is now on the verge of returning to the Premier League.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has been keen to get business done early so far during the transfer window and the former Liverpool manager looks set to complete a deal for the right-back.

Manquillo is expected to arrive in England soon to undergo a medical before signing a three-year deal with the Magpies.

The Spaniard also spent last season on loan at Sunderland and made 20 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats, who were relegated.

However, it appears Newcastle are willing to give the defender another crack at English football and hope to complete the deal this week.
