Joey Barton tells talkSPORT: I’d choose Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino ahead of Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp everyday

Joey Barton has made it clear he does not believe Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a ‘super coach’, even placing Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the German.

Barton laid into the 50-year-old over the weekend, telling talkSPORT he is nothing more than a ‘giant German cheerleader’ rather than an astute, top level footballing coach.

And former Newcastle, Manchester City and Burnley midfielder Barton has continued his scathing attack by listing those managers he feels are superior to Klopp.

The usual names of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola are in there - as they are serial trophy winners throughout Europe - but Barton has even included Pochettino as more of a super coach than Klopp.

Pochettino has never wonder silverware as a manager, whereas the Liverpool boss won five trophies while in charge of Borussia Dortmund, but that does not matter to Barton.

Speaking alongside Danny Kelly as a co-host on Kick Off, Barton said: “I haven’t at any stage said Klopp’s mediocre - I’ve just said he’s not a super coach.

“He’s not a Guardiola, he’s not a Mourinho, he’s not a [Carlo] Ancelotti. I think he puts himself in that bracket.

“I would go as far as to say that he’s not even a Pochettino. Bearing in mind that he’s earning £2m-a-season more than Pochettino, if you give me a straight up choice between the two, based on what I’ve seen in the English game, everyday I’m taking Pochettino.”
