Arsenal tried to sign Napoli’s Dries Mertens during summer transfer window, claim reports in Italy

Arsenal failed with an approach for Napoli star Dries Mertens this summer, according to reports in Italy.
The 30-year-old was in sensational form last season and he ended the campaign with over 30 goals after being converted from a winger to a striker.
The Belgian's form saw him rewarded with a new contract in May, which ties him to Napoli until June 2020.
But before that, according to Calciomercato, Arsenal were trying to snap up Mertens and bring him to London.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger reportedly wanted the forward to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season.
However, Mertens is said to have snubbed their offer in favour of signing a new deal at Napoli and that ended Arsenal's interest.
