‘Wales’ biggest strength is their unity...not Gareth Bale!’ – Danny Gabbidon backs Dragons to prove they are not a one-man team

Danny Gabbidon has urged Wales to prove they are not a one-man team by beating Georgia to continue their hunt for a World Cup spot…without Gareth Bale.

Chris Coleman’s men have to come away from Friday night’s trip to Tbilisi with a victory to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

But they will have to do so without talisman Bale, with their Real Madrid star out of their remaining qualification games due to a calf injury.

Wales’ record without Bale does not make comfortable reading - their last competitive victory without him was back in 2013, when a Simon Church goal sealed a 1-0 victory over Macedonia.

However, former Cardiff defender Gabbidon believes Wales now have the players and togetherness to perform even without their star man.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the ex-Wales international said: “Any team who misses a world class player is not going to be the same

“Gareth Bale is the difference, he’s the match-winner, he produces those big moments, but if you look at the two wins Wales got last month, Bale played but he wasn’t really influential on those wins - other players had to step up.

“Bale has struggled to perform at his best, he’s struggled with injury and other players have had to step up throughout the qualifying campaign to keep Wales in with a shout, and they have done that.

“Everyone talks about Gareth Bale and Wales being a one-man team, but that is the biggest strength of this team; the unity, the team spirit, how well everyone gets on, and how much everyone fights for each other.

“That’s probably what has kept Wales in this group really, they have underperformed and haven’t hit the heights of the European campaign.

“Their togetherness and battling spirit has kept them in with a chance of qualifying and it’s going to be vital again tonight.

“The team have moved on since the ‘just give it to Bale’ days. We’re not so heavily reliant of him.

“It’s a decent squad of players, with young players breaking through and making an impact.”
