‘I don’t know what has happened’ - Southampton boss Koeman admits doubts over Toby Alderweireld deal

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has admitted the club may lose out in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Toby Alderweireld, amid reports Tottenham are close to landing the defender.

The Belgium international spent a successful loan spell at St Mary’s last season and the Saints were expected to complete a permanent £6.8million deal this summer, after it was understood Atletico failed to cancel his buy-out clause in time.

But Alderweireld's performances last term also attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham, who have reportedly had an £11m bid accepted by the Spanish outfit, despite Southampton having first refusal as part of their loan agreement.

And, with Southampton believing they are entitled to purchase the Belgian centre-back, a frustrated Koeman insists Alderweireld was keen to stay with the south coast club.

"Southampton signed an option for the player and Atletico Madrid is trying to take back the option," said the Saints boss.

"In our knowledge this was too late and what happened with Tottenham in the middle, I don't know.

"The player told us he was very happy about Southampton. We mentioned to the player that we would like to continue and that was the case to Atletico Madrid and what happened after, I don't know."
