Stuart Pearce hoping to make instant impact on the training pitch at West Ham

Stuart Pearce is hopeful his coaching ability will prove to be a valuable asset alongside Alan Irvine and Billy McKinlay at West Ham.

The trio of former managers were recruited by new Hammers boss David Moyes as part of a backroom staff overhaul at the London Stadium following Slaven Bilic’s sacking.

Pearce returns to the club where he made 50 appearances and will be expected to help reverse the fortunes of a side, who currently sit in the Premier League relegation zone.

And Pearce is optimistic his experience on the training ground will bring the best out of a squad lacking in confidence.

“David wants to have an impact quite early on - which is quite understandable - he’s used to working with Alan Irvine and Billy [McKinlay ] before,” Pearce told Kick Off.

“I’m the only one he hasn’t worked with. It’s really just a case of all us finding our level and then using the strengths within our squad from there.

“We’ve got a manager that likes coaching - and three coaches as well - [so] it gives us the ability to get round all the players and work individually and in units more often maybe than when you’ve got a lighter squad.”

The Hammers have conceded 23 league goals this season and have suffered heavy defeats against Manchester United, Newcastle, Brighton and Liverpool.

And having watched his former club struggle while performing his punditry role at talkSPORT, Pearce believes watching from the side-lines will provide him with a good base to work from.

“I don’t call it a prejudice, I call it an insight,” Pearce added.

“I was fortunate enough to work with talkSPORT for two of their three last games - the one at Wembley against Tottenham and the Liverpool game.

“That gave me an insight on their strengths and weaknesses. Going into the football club from the offset, the first thing that grabs your attention is we’ve conceded more goals than anyone in the Premier League.”
