Manchester United-linked defender set to remain in Italy

Former Liverpool defender Gabriel Paletta, who is a target for Manchester United, is set to join Atalanta, according to reports in Italy.

The 29-year-old, who made just three Premier League appearances during 18 difficult months at Anfield between 2006 and 2007, joined AC Milan from Parma in February.

He made 14 Serie A appearances during the second half of last season but it has now been reported he could be on the move already this summer.

United, who were keen on signing him before he joined Milan, have once again been linked with the 29-year-old Argentinian.

But Gazzetta dello Sport have revealed that it is Atalanta who are set to win the race to sign him this time around and could conclude a deal this week.
