Legendary Liverpool winger John Barnes couldn't contain his excitement about the appointment of Jurgen Klopp, claiming ‘you can’t get better’ than the new Reds manager.

Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the helm last week and will make his Premier League bow against Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime, hoping to lift the Merseysiders’ form after a run of just one win in nine games.

The 48-year-old arrives in England with a rich pedigree after seven successful years at Borussia Dortmund, and Barnes feels his passion and charisma will see him become an instant hit with the Liverpool fans.

“You can’t get better than Jurgen Klopp,” Barnes told Kick Off.

“He’s a great manager. He plays with passion and wears his heart on his sleeve and fans like that.

“He’s not the typical Premier League manager - he speaks very quietly and softly and says the right things.”

While Klopp’s arrival has induced unrivalled levels of hysteria and expectation amongst Liverpool fans, Barnes has urged the Anfield faithful to reward the German with the time he needs to turn their fortunes around.

He added: “Ultimately it’s about getting results. I’m sure the short term reaction of a new manager will give everyone a lift but we have to be realistic as to what we can expect this year and maybe even next year.

“I have no doubt that he will be a success in terms of maximising the potential of Liverpool Football Club.”
