CONFIRMED! Former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet returns to management with AEK Athens

Gus Poyet has agreed to become the new manager of AEK Athens, the Greek club have announced.

Poyet, who has been linked with the vacancy at Aston Villa, has been out of the game since leaving Sunderland in March.

He flew to Greece on Wednesday for talks with Athens about becoming their new boss  - and has quickly agreed terms.

Poyet will sign a contract on Friday before being officially unveiled by the Super League side, who are currently sitting third in the table.

The former Chelsea midfielder will take over from interim head coach Stelios Manolas on a deal that will initally run until the end of the season.

A statement on the club's website read: "AEK FC announces the agreement with the Uruguayan manager Gustavo Poyet until the summer 2016. The new manager will sign his contract tomorrow."
