Exclusive – Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins: Selling Javier Hernandez was a huge mistake

Ex-Man United midfielder Ray Wilkins believes the Red Devils made a big mistake when they sold Mexican forward Javier Hernandez in the summer.
Hernandez left Old Trafford after five years to join Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £7.3million and he has since been linked with a move to Arsenal after impressive form.
He has scored 21 goals this season in 29 appearances for club and country, netting 16 of those in his last 13 matches.
Meanwhile Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United have been noticeably short of firepower this season, with Wayne Rooney failing to regain his form and youngster Anthony Martial is their only regular scorer.
“I don’t quite understand how this guy’s playing outside this country,” Wilkins told Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“He was a snip at £8m-£10m, 27 years of age, should not have been allowed to leave because he’s too talented.”
This evening two of Wilkins’ former clubs face off in a vital match for Van Gaal’s United future.
Out-of-sorts Chelsea - 15th in the Premier League - could do with the win just as much, under new boss Guus Hiddink, and Wilkins feels the Blues will come out on top.
He added: “I would go for Chelsea to win, because I think they have better players on show.
“But you can never tell when you go to Old Trafford, it’s a wonderful place to play.
“Looking at these two teams, if Guus goes with [Loic] Remy up top, I think Chelsea will come out on top.”
