‘He’s just a Brazilian Michael Owen’ – Liverpool fans mock Philippe Coutinho after Champions League quarter-finals

'He's just a Brazilian Michael Owen' - Twitter users mock Philippe Coutinho as Liverpool reach Champions League semi-finals

It's every player's worst nightmare when they leave one team for a bigger club, only to see their former team-mates thriving in your absence.

Philippe Coutinho was the latest player to succumb to this problem as Barcelona were dumped out of the Champions League after losing 3-0 to Roma, while his previous employers Liverpool marched into the semis.

Coutinho swapped Anfield for the Nou Camp in January, with Barca paying £142million for him.

But the Brazilian was not eligible to play in the Liga side's catastrophic away goals defeat having featured in the Reds' earlier Champions League matches where he scored five goals.

However, it means that if Liverpool do win the competition, Coutinho would be entitled to his own winners medal. This would surely be a hollow award, though.

Of course, when something like this happens to a player there are plenty out there on social media who are more than willing to point and laugh.

The famous 'Boring James Milner' Twitter account got the Coutinho ridicule rolling by posting a screenshot of a fake text conversation between the 'Liverpool midfielder' and his former 'eam-mate.

Meanwhile, one Liverpool fan claimed Coutinho could be making the same mistake Michael Owen made when he left the Reds for Real Madrid in August 2004. Later that season, Liverpool won the Champions League against the odds.

And more users were quick to remind Coutinho of this and some even took the opportunity to have a dig at Raheem Sterling, who left Liverpool for Manchester City in July 2015, as well.
