West Ham United co-Chairman David Gold told talkSPORT he has never lied to the fans, but admitted he had made mistakes.

The Hammers have recently appointed Manuel Pellegrini as the successor to David Moyes after an uncomfortable season which saw relationsh between the fans and reach new lows.

Fan protests escalated to such an extent, several picth invasions occurred at the home game against Burnley, which saw supporters hurl abuse in the direction of Gold and his business partners David Sullivan and Karren Brday.

But the 81-year-old West Ham fan told The Jim White Show he wants to move to the fabled ‘next level’ with the club, but believes it is unfair to suggest he is untruthful if they don’t.

“I’ve never lied Jim,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’ve made mistakes and I’ve said things but I’m much more aware of this now.

“When you say we will be moving to the next level, it’s my optimism that we’re going to move to the next level – and if we don’t move to the next level, you can hardly call me a liar

“I’m doing my best!

“It’s not like, and there are a number of analogies I can give you, but we have not lied.”

Gold admitted Pellegrini – a Premier League winner with Manchester City – was already working on signngs to ensure they avoid a narrow escape like last season.

The club eventually finished in 13th place, but spent the majority of the season in the bottom half.
