Every World Cup team ranked by their country’s national flag

The 2018 World Cup is almost upon us and pubs around the country are starting to put up their 32-flag bunting featuring all of the nations competing in the tournament.

Famous teams such as Italy, the USA and the Netherlands miss out on having their ensigns featured, therefore leaving the big question: Who has the best flag of all the teams who have qualfied?

Scroll down to see our comprehensive, scientific, 100 per cent serious ranking of the 32 flags at the 2018 World Cup.

DISCLAIMER: If you’re a person who thinks they might get genuinely offended by someone making fun of their country’s flag, don’t read any further than this, you soft top.

32. Poland

If whoever designed this received even one penny for the job, then they were overpaid.

32

31. Australia

Let’s be honest. They’ve just taken the Union Jack and put a few stars next to it.

32

30. Argentina

Why have they made the sun look like it has tentacles?

32

29. Uruguay

Another one with a tentacled sun! What is it with these South Americans and funny drawings of the sun?

32

28. Japan

Shocking flag. Literally just a full stop. Imagine deciding to sum up hundreds of years of imperial history with just a full stop.

32

27. Morocco

A star, that’s it. Only slightly better than Japan’s full stop.

32

26. Saudi Arabia

Can’t read what that says, so not interested in it.

32

25. Colombia

Why is the yellow bit so big? Why would they not just make the proportions equal like every other flag on the planet? Utterly stupid.

32

24. England

Wow, a cross. How exciting. Bet no other countries have done that.

32

23. Denmark

Oh shock, another cross, but with the colours the other way round. Really inventive.

32

22. Sweden

Copy. Paste. Boring. Cross.

32

21. Switzerland

This cross gets ranked higher than the others because the flag’s actually a square. So at least that’s a bit different.

32

20. France

Wait, you didn't incorporate frogs legs OR snails? Disappointing.

32

19. Belgium

Decent flag, not very exciting though… just like the country it represents.

32

18. Nigeria

Looks like a really close up, bird’s-eye-view of the half-way line.

32

17. Russia

Well at least there's no hammer and sickle. Mind you, the old CCCP kits were pretty cool.

32

16. Tunisia

You see this, Japan? This is a square with a dot in the middle, too, but these guys have put in a star and crescent as a nod to their history in the Ottoman Empire. How hard was that?

32

15. Portugal

If you’re going to put your country’s coat of arms on your flag, at least make sure it’s more interesting than just a few shields and some castles.

32

14. Spain

This is a way better coat of arms. Good work, Spain.

32

13. Serbia

It’s like the Russia flag, only upside down and with a cool double-headed eagle involved.

32

12. Iran

Something a bit different with the cultural designs separating the three coloured sections. More flags should take a leaf out of Iran’s book on this.

32

11. Costa Rica

Looks a little bit like toothpaste. Although that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

32

10. Egypt

Don’t want to say too much about this flag in case those wishing death on Sergio Ramos following his tangle with Mo Salah turn up at the office. Cool eagle, guys!

32

9. Croatia

Gets a high rating solely for the fact it has a golden goat with red horns on it.

32

8. Senegal

Vibrant colours and a nice little star in the middle. This is a simple flag you can get on board with.

32

7. Germany

Power flag. Black, red and yellow. No messing around with a white section or any of that nonsense. Proper flag, proper German.

32

6. Iceland

Round of applause for Iceland everyone. They managed to do a cross and not make it look boring. Who knew all it needed was a funky border?

32

5. South Korea

A very unique flag. So unique that four of the patterns surrounding the main circle (made up of three black lines) are unique. That’s elite level uniqueness.

32

4. Panama

Another unique effort which has to be appreciated. Does look a bit like a game of ‘Piano Tiles’ though.

32

3. Peru

THERE’S A LLAMA IN THIS FLAG. Well, not your typical llama, it’s a vicuna – a relative of a llama. Close enough.

32

2. Brazil

Great colours, for a great nation, which has led to a great football kit and a great football team (except in 2014).

32

1. Mexico

This has to be top as it is the only flag here that actually has something genuinely interesting going on in it. Who will win in the battle of eagle v serpent? We may never know.
