Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish awarded knighthood in Queen’s Birthday Honours list
Dalglish is the only sporting figure to be knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list
Kenny Dalglish has been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his services to football as well as his charity work and the support of the Hillsborough families.
The Liverpool legend won three European Cups and six league titles in what was a glittering career as a player and a manager for the Reds.
He also made 102 appearances for Scotland.
But perhaps what has earned him the knighthood is through his charity work for the Marina Dalglish Appeal and the support he offered to the families affected by the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.
He said: "I thought it was a tax bill. For the family, it's a huge honour.
"It won't make any difference to me, I'll just maybe need to change my passport!
"But just because we're a wee bit embarrassed about it doesn't underestimate how pleased and proud we are to have received it.
"I hope everyone who came into our lives enjoys it as well."
Dalglish is the only sporting figure knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
However, OBEs were awarded to world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and two-time Olympic skeleton champion Lizzie Yarnold, as well as Bournemouth and former England striker Jermain Defoe.
