England midfielder Jordan Henderson insists Spain will still be a threat at the World Cup, despite sacking their manager 24 hours before the tournament kicks off.
Spain’s tournament preparations were shattered on Wednesday as boss Julen Lopetegui left his role just two days before their opening game against Portugal.
The Spanish FA confirmed the manager’s departure in a press conference, revealing he had been given the chop having agreed to become Real Madrid’s new head coach without telling his current employers until five minutes before it was officially announced on Tuesday.
Lopetegui was due to continue his role with Spain for the World Cup before leaving to take charge at the Bernebeu, but they will now be coached by sporting director Fernando Hierro.
It appears to be a huge blow to the 2010 champions ahead of the tournament, but Henderson told talkSPORT on Wednesday that the Spaniards could emerge even stronger from the upheaval.
Speaking after England’s first Russia training session on Wednesday, the Liverpool skipper said: “It’s shock obviously, especially a day before the World Cup starts.
“But to be honest, they’re a world class team.
“They’ve got fantastic players. I’m sure they’ll still be a threat.
“If anything it could make them even stronger and stick together.”
