James Rodriguez linked with shock Real Madrid return halfway through loan spell at Bayern Munich

The departure of Zinedine Zidane as Real Madrid boss has breathed new life into Rodriguez's career at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid could recall James Rodriguez from his loan spell at Bayern Munich.

Rodriguez agreed a two-year loan switch to the German club last summer after the 27-year-old grew frustrated at a lack of first team football under Zinedine Zidane.

The Colombian enjoyed a productive 2017/18 campaign at the Allianz Arena as Bayern coasted to their sixth Bundesliga title in a row.

Real also enjoyed success last season - winning their third Champions League on the trot.

However, the player is wanted by new Los Blancos boss Julen Lopetegui and talks are ongoing with Bayern about bringing Rodriguez back.

Rodriguez is currently contracted at Real until 2021 and an emotional return could be on the cards now that Zidane is no longer in charge.

The no.10 admitted he would be open to a move back to the Bernabeu when he faced them with Bayern in the Champions League in April.

“Return to Madrid?” Rodriguez said.

“I don’t know, nobody knows what will happen in the future but currently I am with Bayern.

“I’m in a good phase of form at the minute and I am good here, I am happy.”
