Heimir Hallgrímsson leaves post as Iceland manager after leading minnows to European Championship and World Cup
The 51-year-old has spent the past seven years with the national team but will step aside after Russia 2018
Heimir Hallgrímsson has stepped down as manager of the Icelandic football team.
The 51-year-old has been in charge of Iceland for the past five years, having served as assistant boss for two years previously.
He was initially appointed as joint-manager alongside Lars Lagerbäck and the pair led Iceland to qualification for the 2016 European Championship,
In doing so, Iceland - with a population of around 350,000 - became the smallest nation ever to reach a major tournament and they went on stun England in the knockout stages on their way to the quarter-finals.
Hallgrímsson - who also works as a dentist - took sole charge after Euro 2016 and masterminded Iceland's qualification for the 2018 World Cup.
Iceland, the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup finals, were drawn into a tough group, containing Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria.
They held Lionel Messi's Argentina to a 1-1 draw in their opening match but lost to Nigeria and Croatia to finish bottom of Group D.
The Icelandic Football Association announced the news via its official Twitter account on Tuesday.
