‘Bet every club wishes they had him now’ – John Arne Riise and these Liverpool fans believe Virgil van Dijk is the best centre-back in the world

The Dutchman helped the Reds achieve a 2-1 victory over Tottenham at Wembley

Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has labelled Virgil van Dijk as the "best centre-back in the world" after Liverpool's 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino got Liverpool's goals and the three points despite Erik Lamela's stoppage-time strike which created a nervy end to the game.

Although the Reds only won by one goal, it was a game the away side dominated and had their attack been more clinical it would have been far more comfortable.

There were a number of good performances including from Firmino - who got what turned out to be the decisive strike - which impressed a number of Kopites.

However, the defence should also be praised as the likes of Van Dijk helped neutralise Spurs forwards Harry Kane and Lucas Moura.

And Riise, who played for Liverpool between 2001-08 was full of praise for the Dutch defender, tweeting: "The best CB [centre-back] in the world is Virgil van Dijk.

"The difference he has made since he came. So calm. Can play. Strong in the air.

"Power! Pure power! Big fan! And he wasn't worth the money (!) I bet every club wished they had him now."

Van Dijk moved to Anfield in January for £75million - a world record fee for a defender and Liverpool's record signing for a defender.

However, these Reds fans echoed Riise's view that he was definitely worth the large transfer fee.
