RED DEVIL'S VERDICT

Swapping Jose Mourinho for Zinedine Zidane would NOT fix ‘clueless’ Manchester United, Louis Saha tells talkSPORT

The former Red Devils striker says any new manager would have the same problems Mourinho is experiencing at Old Trafford

Sacking Jose Mourinho and bringing in Zinedine Zidane as his replacement would NOT fix the problems at Manchester United, according to former Red Devils striker Louis Saha.

The pressure on Mourinho is mounting after United’s poor start to the season continued with a disastrous 3-1 defeat at West Ham on Saturday.

The Portuguese has now overseen the club’s worst start to a season in 29 years.

United have ten points from seven games, the same as in the 2013/14 season under David Moyes, but currently have a lesser goal different than the team which played under the ill-fated Scot.

It is claimed Mourinho is now fearing for his job amid speculation the club have already approached Zidane to replace him in the Old Trafford dugout.

But Saha says even the former Real Madrid boss, who claimed three straight Champions League titles in charge at the Bernabeu, would struggle to turn around the form of the current United team – who he says have looked clueless going forward at times this term.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Ian Abrahams, the Frenchman said: “You expect a lot from the manager. It’s been really difficult this year, more than the others.

“Defensive football has always been Mourinho’s strength, but offensively they don’t seem to have a clue right now. It’s a pity.

“A question has definitely been raised. I’m not the one to answer because now I’m only a fan, but of course we all expect more from everybody, the players and the staff.

“How long will he stay? It’s up to the results. When you see the team playing this way, any club in the world with this size and this history, you have a lot of pressure and you have to find a solution pretty quickly and I hope they do it.

“But with this team, whatever manager is going to come is going to have the same issue.

“It’s a lot of work for whoever comes.

“Zidane? He would want to pick a big team with big players, at Real Madrid he had a team of Galacticos - but it’s a different set up at Manchester United.

“He would have a lot of coaching to do, more than just management.”

Ally McCoist agreed with the former United star, and argued that bringing in Zidane would NOT change the fortunes of the Man United team.

“You have to look at the players,” the former Scotland striker said on Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“Take away the manager entirely and look at the group of players – are they capable of top four? No!

“I don’t think they are as strong defensively as any of the top teams in the league, and that’s their biggest problem.”
