Chelsea 1-0 Vidi FC: Alvaro Morata strike decides tough Europa League test

The Blues were made to work hard for the victory as their misfiring striker ended his mini goal drought

Alvaro Morata finally found the target in the Europa League as Chelsea beat Hungarian champions Vidi 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Morata missed a host of chances in the opening Group L win at PAOK in Greece two weeks ago and spurned a glorious opportunity in the first half on Thursday night.

The 25-year-old made amends with 20 minutes to go, but only after Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri had turned to Eden Hazard in a bid to break a deadlock which stood due to the Blues' wasteful finishing.

Morata, called up by Spain earlier on Thursday, missed a guilt-edged chance after 17 minutes.

Pedro fed his compatriot, who took one touch and prodded his second over goalkeeper Tomas Tujvel, but wide of the goal.

Morata looked desperately short of confidence throughout, but found redemption in the second-half.

Cesc Fabregas' cross from the right channel was flicked on by Willian and Morata got in front of his marker to prod the ball in for his second goal of the season.

Vidi might have been level when substitute Istvan Kovacs stole in behind the Chelsea defence, forcing Kepa Arrizabalaga into a smart save late on, as a supposedly easy night proved anything but at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Chelsea build a three-point lead at the top of Group L with two wins from two games.
