Wayne Rooney praises ‘incredible’ DC United assist as side secure MLS play-off spot

Lucho Acosta made a stunning run down the left to provide his team-mate with a tap-in

Wayne Rooney heaped praise on team-mate Luciano ‘Lucho’ Acosta after his stunning assist against New York City.

DC United ran out 3-1 winners to claim a play-off spot on Sunday, with the former Manchester United and Everton man bagging a brace.

Rooney’s first goal to open the scoring was a simple tap-in created by a sensational run from Acosta, who cut in from the left and beat multiple opposition players before providing for the striker.

"It was incredible – that's what he can do, he's a fantastic player," Rooney said after the match.

"There's not many players who can do that."

Since Wayne Rooney’s DC United debut in July, he has scored 12 goals and picked up seven assists while Lucho Acosta has nine goals and ten assists.

The connection between them has therefore generated much discussion, something the Englishman was quick to encourage.

"I think we just enjoy playing with each other, we both play to each other's strengths," he continued.

"He's the one that's going to get the ball and run at defenders, so for me it's quite simple: give him the ball and then get in the box."
