Manchester United transfer news: Jose Mourinho ‘confident’ of signing Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin in January transfer window

The Uruguay international rejected a move to Old Trafford in the summer in what many saw as a ploy to get a better contract

Ed Woodward is 'confident' he can bring Jose Mourinho's top target Diego Godin to Manchester United, according to reports.

The Atletico Madrid captain was linked with a move to Old Trafford as the Red Devils boss sought defensive reinforcements.

However, as soon as the speculation died down the 32-year-old signed a new deal with the LaLiga side - leading many to speculate it had all been a ploy.

However, according to the Daily Star, it appears as though the move could well be back on.

According to the report, chief executive Woodward has held 'several rounds of talks' with representatives for the Uruguay international and believes a deal could be struck.

United are apparently ready to pay the £20million release clause for a player who is keen to test himself in the Premier League before he brings the curtain down on a glittering career.

The Red Devils are sitting precariously in eighth position in the table having conceded an astonishing 21 goals.

Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United are just some of the sides who have conceded less.

Godin was one of several targets Man United were linked with in the summer. Moves for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Milan Skriniar also failed to materialise.
