Gunnar get it

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘firmly in the hunt’ for the Manchester United manager job, says treble winner Teddy Sheringham

"He’s lifted the club and he’s getting results, what more could you want? Long may it continue!"

Teddy Sheringham believes former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a very real chance of becoming the new permanent manager of Manchester United.

The Norwegian took over as caretaker boss only until the end of the season following the departure of Jose Mourinho in mid-December.

But he has overseen an almost miraculous turnaround since taking charge.

Having looked uninspired and unmotivated under Mourinho, the Red Devils have got their mojo back under Solskjaer, who with Sunday's 1-0 victory over Tottenham become the first United manager to win all of his first six games as manager.

There has been no official word on United’s progress as they search for their next full-time boss, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane, Massimiliano Allegri and even England boss Gareth Southgate linked with the role.

But many have tipped Solskjaer to continue his good work at Old Trafford, and Sheringham, who scored United's first goal in the 1999 Champions League final before Solskjaer's winner, believes his old strike partner has what it takes.

Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White, Sheringham said: “Ole is definitely asking the question, isn’t he? He obviously wants the job.

“He’s loving every minute but you can tell he’s not being overawed by anything, he’s getting results and he’s getting the team flowing in full.

“He’s really brought a breath of fresh air back to Manchester United recently and long may it continue.

“He’s getting the results, he’s in the hotseat at the moment, he’s got the chance. Who knows what’s going on above him, he can’t do anything about that.

“All he needs to do is keep getting results and it speaks for itself, the players are obviously loving him, loving what he’s doing and how he wants them to play.

“They’re playing with a smile on their faces and they’re getting results, what more could you want?

“He’s putting himself firmly in the hunt for the job.”
