Tim Sherwood exclusive: Daniel Levy deserves a lot of the credit for Tottenham’s success this season

Tim Sherwood believes Daniel Levy deserves a lot of the credit for Tottenham's success this season

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood believes Daniel Levy deserves a lot of the credit for the position the club currently find themselves in.

Spurs are the bookies' favourites for the Premier League title this season and face a potential title decider with north London rivals Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime.

Levy has received a lot of criticism for cashing in on the club’s star players, such as Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, in the past, but Sherwood praised the chairman for giving Mauricio Pochettino the chance to build a squad.

“Tottenham have got it right on and off the pitch,” Sherwood told Drivetime.

“I think Daniel Levy needs to get an awful lot of credit. It has taken time but he has given a manager now time to build a squad.

“He’s got a recruitment guy - Paul Mitchell - who recruits the players for the manager and not for the football club.

“He’s got a blend of youth and experience and they’ve all got legs, they’ve all got pace and they can keep going for 90 minutes. That is what has got them there - and they’re not short of quality either.”

One of those players who Sherwood identifies as one of the best examples of Tottenham’s recruitment policy is goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Sherwood hails the France and Spurs captain as the best goalkeeper in the league and believes his calming influence is integral during the club’s end of season run-in.

“The goalie is the best in the league,” Sherwood continued.

“Sometimes you won’t even know he is there in training, he just gets on with his job. He is the ultimate professional.

“If you are a young goalie, you look up to him and the way he applies himself. When the boys look at him in the dressing room - he’s not a ranter or raver, he just leads by example.

“They look at him at think he is a calming influence.”
