On Friday night, the 20-year-old put in an accomplished performance in his full debut for the Three Lions as they emphatically beat Montenegro.

It seemed more like his 51st start rather than his first - and Rice showed everyone just how far he has come in the game by posting a throwback snap of him and Harry Kane from 2014.

Along with the picture, he tweeted: "From asking @HKane for a picture in 2014, to my @England teammate in 2019. What a journey!"

Rice's could now make England's defensive midfield role his own for years to come.

And after the match he couldn't hide his elation after completing the full 90 minutes.

He said: "To get the win, 5-1; to get the start - I’ve loved every minute of it. I have been training well and obviously with Eric Dier’s injury as well that gave me that chance.

"I loved every minute of it. From the start, singing the national anthem. You just can’t describe it.

"I knew on Sunday [that I was going to start]. The game face was on and I knew I had to be focused on what lie ahead."
