But it was revealed on Tuesday morning that Bowyer would actually be staying on and the 42-year-old has signed a one-year contract extension.

So Bowyer stays and life goes on at The Valley, albeit a rather turbulent life with the unpopular Duchatelet still there.

But these turn of events got us thinking about similar incidents and below you can see EIGHT other U-turns that have happened in the past.

Harry Redknapp

Veteran manager Harry Redknapp took the decision to leave his post as Portsmouth boss in November 2004 before joining south coast rivals Southampton a matter of weeks later.

'Arry took over a struggling Saints side and was unable to keep them in the Premier League that season.

He quit his gig at St Mary's in December 2005 and went back to Fratton Park, thus completing his managerial U-turn.

Ross Barkley

The England international was all set to leave boyhood club Everton to join Chelsea on deadline day in August 2017.

However, the midfielder sensationally changed his mind on making his move to Stamford Bridge so he could recover from a hamstring injury at Goodison Park.

This U-turn was only temporary though and Barkley did end up moving to Chelsea in January 2018 for a fee of £15million.

8

Paul Scholes

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes finished his 18-year career at the end of the 2010/11 season - only for him to come back six months later.

The former midfielder was brought back into the Red Devils fold for the second half of the 2012/13 campaign but they missed out on the league title following Sergio Aguero's famous stoppage-time strike against Queens Park Rangers.

But Scholes did win one more Premier League the following season and he then left United for good.

8

Steven Gerrard

The midfielder nearly broke the hearts of Liverpool supporters when he came close to signing for Chelsea a matter of weeks after winning the Champions League with his boyhood club in 2005.

How close he came to joining the Blues is disputed but Gerrard maintains that he handed in a transfer request in a bid to get Liverpool to increase his wages to be more in line with that of other world class players around the world.

Gerrard would go onto stay at Anfield for another ten years before going to LA Galaxy in the final years of his career.

Fabian Delph

Fabian Delph choosing to move to Manchester City in July 2015 is no surprise but the manner in which he left Aston Villa was a big surprise indeed.

On July 11, Delph decided against moving to the Citizens and stated his loyalty to Villa, having signed a new contract with them six months earlier.

But Delph completed his transfer to City on July 17, just SIX days after saying he wouldn't go.

He's still reminded of this remarkable change in tune on social media to this day and is branded a 'snake' by Villans fans.

David de Gea

The Manchester United goalkeeper looked all set for a high profile move to Real Madrid on deadline day in August 2015.

However, the deal never materialised as the required paperwork was not submitted by Real on time - although the LaLiga giants blamed United for allegedly holding up the transfer.

And then just ten days later the Spaniard signed a new contract at Old Trafford which expires in 2020.

Fabio Aurelio

Liverpool let go Fabio Aurelio in May 2010 after the left-back rejected a pay-as-you-play offer to stay at the club.

However, Rafael Benitez, who sanctioned the decision was sacked shortly afterwards and his successor Roy Hodgson managed to intercept Aurelio before he left the Liverpool area.

In August 2010, the Brazilian signed a two-year deal with the club but left at the end of the 2011/12 season.

James Constable

And finally, one you may not have heard about but the Constable transfer saga was huge for Oxford United and Swindon Town fans.

In January 2012, Oxford accepted an offer from their rivals for their star striker and he seemed destined for a move to the County Ground.

However, Constable declined the opportunity to speak to Swindon and Robins boss at the time Paolo Di Canio immediately went off him.
