Mats Hummels quits Bayern Munich to make emotional return to Borussia Dortmund

The World Cup winner moved to Bavaria in 2016 and won the German domestic double in 2019

Bayern Munich have confirmed Mats Hummels will leave in a £33million deal to return to Borussia Dortmund.

The 2014 World Cup winner left Signal Iduna Park three years ago as captain of Dortmund.

In his seven years at the back, he scored 25 goals in 306 competitive appearances - leading the 'Black and Yellows' to the Champions League final in 2013.

Having confirmed the news to their supporters via a GIF of Hummels on social media, a club statement read: "Borussia Dortmund has reached an agreement in principle with FC Bayern Munich over the transfer of defender Mats Hummels.

"The centre-back, who previously played for BVB between 2008 and 2016, scoring 25 goals in 306 competitive appearances for the Black & Yellows, is set to return to his former club ahead of the new season.

"The transfer remains subject to a medical, which has yet to be carried out.

"Both parties have agreed not to disclose the contents of the transfer agreement."

His first game will be in the German Super Cup against his former club in the season's curtain-raiser.

Lucien Favre's side narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title having lead the way for much of the season.

But experience proved to be the difference, with Niko Kovac's side claiming both the league and cup double.

Hummels began his career with the Bavarian giants before joining Dortmund on loan in 2008.

The club made the move permanent for an incredible €4m (£3.6m) a year later, with Hummels going on to win two titles and one German Cup.

He was a regular at the back for much of the 2010's with the national team too, but was told by coach Joachim Low last season he would no lkonger be considered for selection for Die Mannschaft.
