Carabao Cup round-up: Manchester City ease past Preston, Southampton run riot in battle of the south coast and more

Manchester City followed up their 8-0 demolition of Watford last weekend with a comprehensive victory at Championship side Preston on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup.

Pep Guardiola's side raced out of the blocks with first-half goals from Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and a Ryan Ledson own goal enough to seal a 3-0 win and a spot in the fourth round for the holders.

Elsewhere, Danny Ings' first-half brace set Southampton on their way to victory at south coast rivals Portsmouth, with further strikes from Cedric Soares and substitute Nathan Redmond putting the gloss on the scoreline as they triumphed 4-0.

The two sides were playing each other for the first time in seven years, with former Liverpool striker Ings in red hot form at a vociferous Fratton Park.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's quick-fire double relieved the pressure off Everton boss Marco Silva as they eased past Sheffield Wednesday 2-0.

The 22-year-old found the net twice inside the opening 10 minutes at Hillsborough as the Toffees avoided a cup upset on the road.

Leicester's name will also be in the hat for the next round of the competition after goals from Demarai Gray (2), James Justin and Youri Tielemans secured a 4-0 rout at Luton Town.

Arsenal, meanwhile, eased past Nottingham Forest, winning 5-0 at the Emirates.

Teenage forward Gabriel Martinelli scored twice while Rob Holding marked his return to action after ten months out injured with a goal. Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock were also on the scoresheet.

It was a disastrous night for Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham, however, as they were dumped out of the competition by League Two Colchester. FULL REPORT HERE
