Ian Holloway has thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant Sunderland job.

The Black Cats are on the lookout for a new boss after sacking Jack Ross, with the club sitting sixth in League One after 11 games of the season.

After news of Ross' departure emerged, one of Holloway's former players - Charlie Adam - backed him to step into the Stadium of Light hotseat.

And responding to the Sunderland links, Holloway told talkSPORT on Tuesday: "What a job that is for somebody.

"You are guaranteed however many thousand [fans] a week and you have got to produce. What a wonderful, wonderful opportunity with a great fanbase to get things going again.

"I would run up there now!

"I have never been favourite for anything, I have always been an underdog.

"I would love the challenge of a football club like that.

"It is a wonderful job. Whoever they want to choose, they need someone with motivational skills like you won't believe because at the end of the day it is bringing that crowd back with the team."

Holloway has huge experience in the game, having managed Bristol Rovers, QPR (twice), Plymouth, Leicester, Blackpool, Crystal Palace and Millwall.

He has been out of the game since leaving QPR in May 2018, after 18 months in charge at Loftus Road.
