However, Jurgen Klopp’s men have made a blistering unbeaten start to the 2019/20 campaign by winning 10 of their 11 opening games.

Liverpool could go nine points clear of second-placed Man City if they beat them at Anfield on Sunday.

City will be without first-choice goalkeeper Ederson, who was forced off in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Atalanta with a muscular problem.

Liverpool dominated the 1970s and 1980s era of English football, winning 11 titles in an 18-year spell.

Those title-winning teams had the likes of Anfield legends Ian Callaghan, Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness and John Barnes starring for the club and were managed by all-time greats Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Now Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and more Liverpool stars are doing all they can to win the club a first ever top-flight title in the Premier League era un Klopp.

With Liverpool unbeaten so far this season, a question was put to Klopp after last weekend’s dramatic 2-1 win over Aston Villa asking whether his side could copy Arsenal's ‘Invincible’ 2003/04 campaign.

And the German downplayed that possibility, insisting his players were not thinking about it.

He said: “It is not possible if you play like we did until we conceded the goal.

“It was not bad, it was actually the opposite, it was good football, but it was not the winning mentality we need.

“It is probably not possible, but we don’t think about it to be honest.

“We think about how we can win the next game and the next game.”

So, can they maintain their form and go all the way? Sunday's match will tell us just how realistic it really is.
