Jose Mourinho has taken his first Tottenham training session since he was appointed the club's new head coach.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss signed a three-and-a-half year contract to replace Mauricio Pochettino in the White Hart Lane dugout.

Pochettino only left the club on Tuesday evening, after five-and-a-half years in charge, but Spurs moved quickly to bring in Mourinho, and he was taking his first training session as Spurs boss less than 24 hours later.

In his first interview as Spurs boss, Mourinho said: "I couldn’t be happier and if I was not as happy as I am, I wouldn’t be here.

“What can I promise? Passion – for my job but also passion for my club.

“In relation to the Premier League, we know where we are and we know that we don’t belong there.

“At the end of the season we will see where we are but I know we are going to be in a different position than we are now.”

He will be assisted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by Joao Sacramento, Carlos Lalin, Nuno Santos, Ricardo Formosinho and Giovanni Cerra.

Sacramento joins as assistant head coach from Ligue 1 side Lille, where he worked in a similar role, while Santos has also moved from Lille and becomes goalkeeper coach.

Lalin, who previously worked with Mourinho at Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid, will take up the position of fitness coach, while Formosinho and Cerra take up the roles of tactical analyst and technical analyst respectively.

Tottenham's first game under their new look coaching team is on Saturday at London rivals West Ham - with LIVE and EXCLUSIVE commentary on talkSPORT.

From their statement alone, it is clear why chairman Daniel Levy saw Mourinho as the perfect replacement for Pochettino and build on the Argentine's success at the club.

The statement continued: "Jose is one of the world’s most accomplished managers having won 25 senior trophies.

"He is renowned for his tactical prowess and has managed FC Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

"He has won a domestic title in a record four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010. He is also a three-time Premier League Champion with Chelsea (2005, 2006, 2015)."

The signing of Mourinho is third time lucky for chairman Levy, who has made previous attempts to hire the manager and he said his arrival can bring 'energy and belief to the dressing room' after a poor start to the campaign under Pochettino.

Levy said: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football.

"He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

It's taken less than a year for Mourinho to return to the Premier League.

The coach had been working as a regular pundit for Sky Sports since leaving United last year, and has turned down a number of opportunities to coach abroad, including with clubs in China, Spain and Portugal.

One of his former players, Ashley Cole, was surprised by the appointment.

Cole told talkSPORT: "Obviously he was a Chelsea man and then went to Man United, and now he’s back.

“I appreciate the work he did at Chelsea and what he tried to do at Man United, and this is going to be a tough test for him. It is something different for him.

“But I think he will do well; he is a great coach and a great manager," adding that bitterness between the Premier League sides will count for nothing.

"When people talk about that sort of stuff, when they talk about rivalry, at the end of the day he wants a job and wants to get back into work.

“It’s a great job for him to take.”
