Trapattoni leaves role as Republic of Ireland boss

Giovanni Trapattoni has left his position as Republic of Ireland manager by 'mutual consent'.

The Italian's five-year reign is over after the 1-0 defeat to Austria on Tuesday night all but ended Ireland's chances of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

Trapattoni has been under severe pressure since a disappointing European Championship campaign and Shay Given called for the 74-year-old to go even before the loss in Austria.

Following a meeting with the Football Association of Ireland this morning, Trapattoni has now agreed to go and assistant Marco Tardelli has also left.

"I want to thank everyone in Ireland who has given us their support during our time here which has always meant a lot to us," said Trapattoni.

"We leave this country with emotion because we understand the Irish supporters who have a well-deserved international reputation and they have our utmost respect."
