Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal MUST adapt in January transfer window and reveals Calum Chambers’ injury is ‘not encouraging’

Arsenal manager Mike Arteta has told talkSPORT he will discuss transfer plans with the club’s hierarchy after their latest injury woe.

Tammy Abraham's late finish stole Chelsea a dramatic 2-1 Premier League victory over the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

England striker Abraham's 12th league goal of the season denied new Gunners boss Arteta any points on his first home game at the helm.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno's howler had gifted Chelsea an equaliser when Jorginho tapped into an empty net with seven minutes to play.

And then Abraham traded passes with Willian on the break before spinning and firing beyond Leno to complete a battling victory on an afternoon filled with struggle for the visitors.

For the bulk of the match, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang thought his 13th league goal of the campaign would prove sufficient to hand Arteta the dream home debut.

But an embattled Chelsea turned this match on its head late on, just when a sixth defeat in eight league games had appeared likely.

And after Calum Chambers limped off with a painful looking injury after just 20 minutes, the Spaniard admitted reinforcements could be brought in.

“We will discuss in the next few days, internally, where we can improve the squad,” Arteta told Ian ‘The Moose’ Abrahams.

“Because at the moment we have a lot of injuries like I said.

“Some of them might be long term as well, so we have to adapt the plan.”

Although he refused to use a stretcher, Chambers’ injury is a serious concern for the new manager.

“I spoke with the doctor and it was not very encouraging,” Arteta added. “We will have to see the scan and what it shows.

“But he was in pain.”
