Virgil van Dijk is NOT the Premier League’s best ever defender, says Jason Cundy – ‘John Terry captained Chelsea to the title at 24!’

Jason Cundy insists Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is NOT the Premier League’s best ever defender over Chelsea legend John Terry.
Arsenal Invincible Martin Keown recently sparked controversy by claiming Van Dijk is the best centre-back in the Premier League's history.
That is despite Keown himself playing alongside Gunners hero Tony Adams and clashing with the likes of Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand, who partnered another top flight legend in Nemanja Vidic.
But it seems Keown is not alone, with a Man United fan even getting in on the act on talkSPORT, saying Liverpool ace Van Dijk is the GREATEST defender of all time... in the history of football... in the world... ever!
“On ability, Van Dijk probably is the greatest defender the game has ever seen,” said Old Trafford faithful Michael.
“I used to argue for years that it used to be Ferdinand, and people used to talk about Terry, Adams, [Sol] Campbell etc, etc.
“But right now players are faster than they’ve ever been, the game is as quick as it’s ever been, and Van Dijk is making defending look just as comfortable as any other centre-back has ever done.”
Cundy, however, respectfully disagrees, saying Terry was already playing at a high level AND was winning trophies at a much younger age.
Speaking on The Sports Bar, the former Chelsea full-back said: “Virgil van Dijk is a complete defender, right now he is the most complete defender.
“But the only thing I would say is he joined Liverpool at 26 and he’s now 28... John Terry was captain of Chelsea and lifting Premier League titles at 24!
“This was a player who was doing it at the very, very top and much younger. I think that has to come into it, doesn’t it?”
When you compare the duo, there appears to be little arguing with the talkSPORT host’s verdict.
In 19 years in a Blues shirt, Terry lifted five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the European Cup and the Europa League.
Van Dijk has a lot of catching up to do with one Champions League won in a Liverpool shirt, although it currently seems he may be adding a Premier League title to this tally come May if the Reds continue their record-breaking unbeaten run.
And Cundy believes the Dutchman could well prove an equal player to Terry, saying Jurgen Klopp’s team are on the cusp of total domination in England and Europe.
“This Liverpool side haven’t lost a league game in a calendar year, their record this season is phenomenal,” he added.
“Liverpool have got to win, and they know this, back-to-back Premier League titles.
“This is a side potentially on the cusp of doing not just that, but they could win back-to-back Champions Leagues as well.”
