Ighalo, 30, is currently playing in China for Shanghai Shenhua, while Slimani is on loan at Monaco from Leicester.

Solskjaer is desperate for striking reinforcements after Marcus Rashford suffered a back injury in the FA Cup third round replay at Wolves, which is set to keep him sidelined for up to three months.

Nigeria international Ighalo notched 17 goals in 55 Premier League appearances for the Hornets before securing a move to China in 2017.

Meanwhile, Slimani has found the net 13 times in 46 games for Leicester, but he has also been loaned out to Newcastle, Fenerbahce and Monaco since arriving in the Midlands four years ago from Monaco.

Meanwhile, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara is stunned that the United boarde continuing to stand by Solskjaer with Mauricio Pochettino waiting in the wings.

Solskjaer has now lost more league games than he has won as permanent boss after the 2-0 defeat at home to Burnley on Wednesday night - with a 34 per cent win ratio from his 32 Premier League game in charge.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, O'Hara said: “There’s a manager there who is unbelievable and he’s out of work!

“I could understand [keeping Solskjaer] if there wasn’t anyone available, but the perfect fit with Manchester United is Pochettino and I can’t believe they’ve waited for so long.

Jamie O'Hara baffled Man United are sticking with Solskjaer when Pochettino is available

“We’re waiting for the inevitable. Ole Gunner Solskjaer is not going to bring back the glory years – he’s not – so get a manager who can rebuild a team, who knows the players he wants, and would make the club more attractive for players coming in."

He continued: “Players would see Pochettino in charge and think, ‘I’ll go there’. At the moment they’re looking at Solskjaer, their form isn’t great and it’s a bit of a fiasco.

“There’s a massive problem somewhere at that club, whether it’s Ed Woodward, Solskjaer, or the players – something is not right.

“And until they sort that out and get their structure back to what it was under [Sir Alex] Ferguson, they’re never going to compete.“
