David de Gea hammered for ‘being arrogant’ after Manchester United goalkeeper’s latest big blunder against Everton

David de Gea has been blasted as ‘arrogant’ after his big blunder in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Everton.

The goalkeeper gifted the Toffees an early lead at Goodison Park on Sunday with his latest mistake in between the sticks, which was punished by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Receiving the ball in his area from a teammate, De Gea dallied on the ball for seven seconds before trying to lump it up field.

But those seven seconds, despite having a number of short passing options available, allowed Calvert-Lewin to close him down and his attempted kick hit the striker and bounced straight into the United goal.

It was a disastrous moment for the Spanish number one. De Gea is no longer the reliable brick wall at the back for United, and his mistakes are not much of a surprise these days.

In fact, this gaffe meant De Gea one now ranks at the top of the list for most errors leading to a goal since the start of the 2018/19 season, with seven.

De Gea did go on to make a number of vital saves during the remaining of the game, though, as United fought back to claim a 1-1 draw, being rescued by a late VAR check that ruled out a dramatic late Everton winner.

But talkSPORT host and former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara was unimpressed by the goalkeeper’s ‘unacceptable’ behaviour in the early stages on Merseyside.

And he believes the Spaniard’s arrogance is costing Manchester United.

“De Gea is paid to make good saves,” said O’Hara on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“He’s on big money. He should be making saves in the crucial moments in games, and what you can’t accept is him doing what he’s doing, where he’s taken seven seconds – just do it quickly!

“It’s unacceptable, that’s something you see in non-league and even then you’d be going mad at your goalkeeper for doing something like that.

“A player like David de Gea cannot afford to make a mistake like that.

“He’s arrogant, for me. That’s his problem, he’s arrogant. He thinks he’s better than he actually is.”

There are big doubts over De Gea's future as United's number one, with 22-year-old Dean Henderson impressing on loan at Sheffield United.

The young Englishman even has more clean sheets in the Premier League this season, with nine for the Blades. De Gea has just seven for United.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed the Spaniard and insisted he is still the world's BEST goalkeeper.

Speaking after the match Solskjaer said: “We want the best possible squad for Man United. David, for me, is the best goalkeeper in the world.

“Dean is a very good challenger and Sergio is a challenger as well. We want a squad that’s full of quality with competition of course and if you want to survive at the top you need to bounce off competition from right, left and centre.

“Dean is our player. He is doing really well at the moment and the day he comes back he’s obviously fighting to play here as well. But for me David showed on Sunday his reaction and the way he made amends and saved that chance from Sigurdsson at the end.

“He went through a difficult patch last season but David has been very, very good this season. I can’t really remember any errors apart from the Watford one. I trust him 100 per cent in the goal.”
