Manchester United legend Jaap Stam announced as new FC Cincinnati manager… but MLS club Tweet picture of wrong person
FC Cincinnati made a hilarious blunder as they announced Manchester United legend Jaap Stam as their new manager… with a picture of another bald bloke!
The former Netherlands centre-back has joined the Major League Soccer club, signing a short-term contract until December 2021.
But, when announcing the deal on social media, Cincinnati used a picture of Ajax youth coach Tinus van Teunenbroek instead!
And Teunenbroek has revealed it’s not the first time this has happened, as he often gets mistaken for the United legend on holiday!
Speaking to , the Dutchman said: “I heard about the incident through a mother of a former pupil of mine - everyone now asks if I have made a transfer to America.
“I have once been mistaken for Jaap Stam in Ajax Showtime [media outlet] by Ajax itself. It happens to me more often, such as on vacation, that people shout: ‘Hey, that's Jaap Stam!’”
The club quickly spotted the gaffe and replaced their post with a correct image of former Reading boss Stam, but it was too late, as a host of their MLS rivals and fans took the mick by posting a series of brilliant replies, featuring other photos of their ‘new manager’.
Man United legend Stam, who has also managed PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord, has replaced compatriot Ron Jans to become Cincinnati's fifth head coach.
Speaking about his appointment, he said: “For myself, to get the opportunity to work in America and to work in MLS for a club like FC Cincinnati, it's a dream.
“I've always liked the country and I've always liked the mentality of the people in the States as well in what they're trying to achieve.
“To get the opportunity to work for FC Cincinnati and this project by building the club - hopefully even further than where they already are, because I think they've already done a great job - but being a presence as a team, even more in MLS, getting results and working together with the fans and everybody already working within the club, for me it's a big challenge to do well."
And he’ll have his work cut out for him in the States – Cincinnati had the league’s worst record in 2019, and lost their first two games of the season before the game was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
