Arsenal and Newcastle face summer transfer battle as Premier League duo fight to sign £32m-rated Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst

Arsenal and Newcastle are interested in signing Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst, according to reports.

The 27-year-old has scored 20 goals for the Bundesliga club this season to alert the two Premier League sides.

German outlet claim Wolfsburg will allow Weghorst to leave for around £32million when the transfer window reopens.

Arsenal could be on the lookout for a striker with uncertainty over the futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubaemyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Aubaemyang, who has been linked to Barcelona, has just one year remaining on his contract, while Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has preferred youngster Eddie Nketiah to Lacazette at times this term.

Newcastle could have cash to splash if their proposed Saudi-backed takeover goes through over the forthcoming weeks.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is led by crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, have been linked with a £300m purchase of the Magpies for months.

Newcastle are in desperate need of firepower as winger Miguel Almiron is their top scorer - with only SIX goals this season.

Joelinton has failed to live up to what was expected of him since arriving for £40m from Hoffenheim last summer.

The Brazilian striker has scored just four goals in 37 appearances for Newcastle.

In stark contrast, Weghorst has netted 33 goals in 66 Bundesliga games since signing for Wolfsburg from AZ Alkmaar in 2018.

Weghorst, who has been capped four times by the Netherlands, insists he is happy in Germany amid speculation over his future.

Last month, he said: "You can't plan much in football.

“Now we need to start playing again, and then we'll see. Of course I have ambitions.

“But I want to make it clear that I feel very comfortable in Wolfsburg."

Nonetheless, he does appear to be interested in becoming a Premier League player sometime soon, saying: "I always said that Germany and England have the best leagues."
