Pints on the ceiling and parties in the streets, those seem like a thing of the past right now.

There will come a day when England score at a major tournament and everyone gets drenched in beer once again, just like on this day in 2018.

It was one of those 'where were you' moments. Where were you when England finally won a penalty shootout?

But before that, England vs Colombia in the last-16 of the Russia World Cup felt like the same old story.

The game was horrible, but England were up for the fight, outplaying the cynical Colombians and looking like sealing a well-earned 1-0 victory.

Then the mood of a nation flipped on its head as Colombia's Yerry Mina cancelled out Harry Kane's penalty in the last minute, and the first miss in the shootout came from England's Jordan Henderson.

Memories of Italia '90 and Euro '96 came flooding back, as the man responsible for missing in 1996 powerlessly watched on from the sidelines and pubs across the country fell into an ominous silence.

More recently, shootout defeats to Portugal (twice) and Italy seemed to confirm the theory that penalties were destined to end in heartbreak for England.

There was almost a sense of foolishness, how had we allowed ourselves to believe that football really could come home? We're supposed to know the score, we've seen it all before.

After 52 years of hurt, England fans could be forgiven for finally giving up on Baddiel and Skinner's dream.
