Pep Guardiola will let Man City squad pick new captain AGAIN with current skipper David Silva to leave Etihad Stadium at end of the season

Pep Guardiola will let his Manchester City players choose David Silva's successor as captain.

Silva featured in his 309th and final Premier League match for City on Sunday as they romped to a 5-0 thrashing of Norwich.

Kevin De Bruyne is believed to be the favourite for the role, with Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero also hugely popular personnel in the City dressing room.

The 34-year-old playmaker now has his sights set on ending a glittering 10-year spell with a first Champions League crown.

Silva was chosen to be captain by his teammates when Vincent Kompany departed Man City last summer.

During his time at Arsenal, Unai Emery also gave the players the power to pick their leaders in the dressing room, with Granit Xhaka named skipper - though he was stripped of the captaincy last November following an outburst at Gunners supporters.

And Guardiola has confirmed he will once again give his squad the final decision in regards to the captaincy.

"As always I let the players choose,” the City manager said.

“Maybe the last word is from me but usually the players decide who will represent them. It’s the normal way. The players are so smart they know what it needs."

Guardiola's men finished 18 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool in second, but are still in contention to win Europe's premier competition - holding a 2-1 advantage heading into their round-of-16 second-leg tie against Real Madrid.
